The case against Dr. Kermit Gosnell, charged with killing a patient and seven viable babies at his West Philadelphia clinic during illegal abortions, and nine co-defendants will bypass preliminary hearings and go directly to the discovery phase, a Court of Common Pleas Judge ruled today.

Common Pleas Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes granted the prosecution motion for Gosnell and his co-defendants over the objections of some defense attorneys.
Gosnell, 69, and his wife, Pearl Gosnell, 50, appeared in court with private attorneys yesterday. Last week, they'd told the court they were too destitute to afford their own attorneys and needed to be assigned public defenders.
