Pittsburgh school district may cut 203 jobs

PITTSBURGH - The city school district says it must cut 203 jobs and $33 million in spending to keep from going broke in a few years.

PITTSBURGH - The city school district says it must cut 203 jobs and $33 million in spending to keep from going broke in a few years.

Superintendent Mark Roosevelt recommended the latest wave of budget and job cuts at the school board's meeting Monday, based on a report by the district's finance director.

The cuts are needed, the district says, because the number of students in city schools is projected to keep dropping for the next several years. Enrollment this year is at 29,445, down 1,703 students from last year, and the district expects to lose an additional 3,600 students over the next three years.

If the cuts are approved, 131 teachers, 30 aides, five librarians and dozens of others jobs will be eliminated. - AP
