Life begins at 40, huh?

Demi Moore

is 44 years old.

Demi Moore is also "mad as hell," and she's "not going to take it any more!"

The two facts are connected.

In an interview with Red magazine, Ashton Kutcher's better - and grown up - half says Hollywood has no use for women older than 40. And that makes her mad.

"It's been a challenging few years, being the age I am. Almost to the point where I felt like, well, they don't know what to do with me," she says. "There aren't that many good roles for women over 40. A lot of them don't have much substance, other than being someone's mother or wife."

Borrowing the famed line from the classic satire Network, Demi says: "We can't just wait for something to happen. We have to say, 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it any more.' "

The Daily Mail exposes the darker side of Demi's attempt to get decent roles: The British paper claims that three years ago, Demi spent almost half a million dollars on just about every plastic surgery procedure out there so she could appear younger.

Colin makes nice

Mercurial Irish thesp

Colin Farrell

, who was in Toronto last week for a screening of his film

Cassandra's Dream

, on Tuesday had his chauffeured Audi pick up his sometime bud

Stress

, a homeless man he had met on previous visits, and took him on a $2,000-plus shopping spree. Items Stress picked up included a sleeping bag, socks, boots.

"He was a cool guy. He doesn't act like a movie star," store manager Dave Mott told the Toronto Sun.

Colin next paid a year's rent for a room for Stress to let, and gave him a wad of bills.

"I'm all set up," Stress told onlookers. "This is my chance to get off the street."

Spears retreats further

Still traumatized from her universally hated comeback turn at the MTV Video Music Awards,

Britney Spears

has withdrawn her bid to appear on the Emmy Awards show Sunday.

Brit "has no plans to appear on the Emmys this Sunday," a rep from Spears' record label, Jive, told Usmagazine.com.

The Web site says Emmy producers wanted Brit to show up on the awards show and "apologize for the VMAs."

Love: Ageless and blind

Last week's greatest love story proves that

amour

indeed is timeless and blind to age - if not to taste.

Elizabeth Taylor

, a veteran of eight marriages, a gazillion films, and 75 (human) years on earth, is in love again.

"Jason Winters is one of the most wonderful men I've ever known, and that's why I love him," Liz T. tells gossip columnist Liz Smith about her beau, a rich bizguy. "He bought us the most beautiful house in Hawaii, and we visit it as often as possible."

Kudos to Reba

Billboard magazine is celebrating

Reba McEntire

- the woman - and has awarded her its inaugural Woman of the Year Award.

The prize - which no doubt will be prestigious someday - happens to coincide with the mag's second annual Women in Music issue, due out early next month.

Why Reba?

Billboard Group editorial director Tamara Conniff: Reba has had wide success in music, television, movies and publishing.

Reba, 52, has a CD of duets due out Tuesday.

Kathie Lee Gifford

Regis Philbin

, 76, and

Kelly Ripa

, 36, on Friday's

Live With Regis and Kelly

to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the syndicated daytime cheery-chatty show,

Live With . . .

Regis had said he worried that Kathy Lee, who left the show in 2000, would not get along with Kelly.

He was ominous on Associated Press Radio, saying he was excited to see "what sparks [would] fly" between the gals. He was, um, Phibbing. No sparks: Kelly and Kathy are old buds.

"I'm a huge fan of hers," Ripa said of Kathy Lee.

The show featured lots of clips from previous years. Sentiment flowed - but no tears.

"I was tempted," Kathie Lee said. "I do all my crying at home now."
