1980s murderer seeks release to a group home

A Chester County judge must decide whether a man responsible for a deadly psychotic rampage nearly 30 years ago can begin a transition from Norristown State Hospital to a community group home.

During a daylong hearing yesterday, Judge Edward Griffith heard conflicting recommendations for Richard Greist, 55, formerly of East Coventry Township. Greist was found not guilty by reason of insanity in 1980 of killing his pregnant wife, mutilating the fetus, gouging his 6-year-old daughter's eye, slashing his grandmother's throat, and butchering the family cat.

Hospital doctors believe Greist has functioned well and deserves a less restrictive setting. A psychiatrist for the prosecution testified that Greist still blames the women in his life for his problems - including the wife he killed - demonstrating a lack of insight and empathy that makes his release from the hospital too risky.

The judge said he would issue a ruling after he had thoroughly reviewed the records.
