Armored car heist in Holmesburg

Police are searching for three men who they say made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars in the armed robbery of an armored car in Holmesburg on Thursday morning.

About 9:30, two men wearing Halloween masks from the Scream movies approached two guards delivering cash in a Garda armored car outside a Wells Fargo bank branch on the 8000 block of Frankford Avenue, FBI spokeswoman Carrie Adamowski said.

The men were carrying TEC-9-style guns, Adamowski said. A TEC-9 is a semiautomatic weapon with a long clip that resembles a small submachine gun.

One guard was already outside the truck unloading money, Adamowski said. One of the masked men approached him, ordered him to the ground, and pushed him down onto the pavement, she said.

The other masked man made for the cash, she said.

The truck's driver remained inside throughout the robbery, she said.

Both guards were armed, Adamowski said. It was unclear whether they drew their guns during the robbery. No shots were fired, she said.

The FBI would not release the amount of money stolen, and it could not be determined whether the truck was cleaned out. Philadelphia police said Thursday morning that the men had taken hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Once the men had taken the cash, they fled in a green minivan driven by a third man, also wearing a mask, Adamowski said.

That vehicle, a 1995 Plymouth Voyager, was later found not far from the bank, she said. Investigators believe the men then fled in a second vehicle, she said.

The FBI learned that the minivan had been reported stolen from an Upper Darby resident in August, Adamowski said.
