A 4-year-old boy died in a house fire Monday afternoon in the city's Feltonville section, the fire commissioner said.

The blaze was reported at 12:07 p.m. in the 200 block of West Wyoming Avenue, said Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer. The fire started on the second floor of the three-story house and spread to the third floor.

The fire was declared under control after 41 minutes, and the boy was found dead in the third-floor rear bedroom, Sawyer said.

"The boy's father actually rescued another child that was in the house, but he couldn't get back to save his own son," Sawyer said.

A mother and her son were taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition and were treated for minor injuries.

The house was equipped with smoke alarms by the Philadelphia Fire Department in August 2011, and they worked Monday, Sawyer said.

Ten people were in the house when the blaze erupted, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
