Boy struck and killed by police car
A 10-year-old boy was struck and killed by a police cruiser while crossing the street Sunday night in Franklin Township.
The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. along Delsea Drive, where the officer was traveling in the northbound lane responding to a call. No further information about the call was available.
The boy and the officer were not identified. No one was in the car besides the officer, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital after the accident. Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the prosecutor's office, said it was unclear whether the officer had been injured or whether taking him to the hospital was a precaution.
Detectives were investigating whether the officer's lights and sirens were on, Weisenfeld said. The officer and witnesses were being interviewed Sunday night.
