An 18-year-old woman was killed after she was struck by a tractor-trailer while standing next to her disabled car on Interstate 295 in Burlington County.
New Jersey State Police said the crash happened in the northbound lanes in Mount Laurel Township, between exits 43 and 44, at about 11:10 p.m Sunday.
Police said Lyric Smith lost control of her 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, veered off the highway and struck a guide rail.
The disabled car came to a stop in the roadway and Smith, of Burlington, got out of the vehicle, police said.
That's when she was struck by a tractor-trailer that was traveling in the center lane, authorities said.
Police said the truck driver, 64-year-old Peter Strautman, of Punta Gorda, Fla. tried to move into the left lane to avoid Smith and her car, but was unable to do so.
Smith was pronounced dead at scene.
Strautman was not injured.
Authorities said the crash remains under investigation.
