Marking 325 years in the Jersey Shade

When Betty Procopio's uncle got back from World War II, he headed straight for Maple Shade's Main Street. Young people gathered at the Rexall soda fountain across from the Roxy Theater, "and he wanted to see his friends," says Procopio, president of the Maple Shade Historical Society.

Maple Shade is set to celebrate its 325th anniversary with a gala at Cafe Fontana (building in the background) which used to be the municipal building, fire house, courthouse and jail. Organizing the celebration are (from left): Betty Procopio, Pres. of the Historical Society of Maple Shade; Ellen McDowell, Pres. of Main St. Maple Shade, Inc.; and Joanne Mortimer, ex. dir. of Main St. Maple Shade Inc. The ladies are standing at the intersection of E. Main St. and Maple St. Oct. 31, 2013. ( CLEM MURRAY / Staff Photographer )
