Driver dies after fleeing police, crashing into tree in South Jersey
A 27-year-old man was killed in a one-vehicle crash in Deptford Township early Thursday after fleeing the scene of a motor-vehicle stop, then crashing into a tree, authorities said.
At the scene in front of Beneficial Bank on Hurffville Road, the vehicle was split in two parts with the front half a burned-out shell and the rear wrapped around a tree. Car parts and debris littered the roadway and parking lots of businesses in the area.
The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement that Andrew B. Davoli of Turnersville, the sole occupant in the vehicle, died in the crash, which occurred about 12:10 a.m.
The prosecutor's office said Davoli crossed the center line on Hurffville Road and hit a tree on the opposite shoulder.
The vehicle had just fled the scene of a motor-vehicle stop conducted by the Deptford Township Police Department, the Prosecutor's Office said. The Prosecutor's Office is investigating the crash, which will be reviewed in accordance with the New Jersey Attorney General's vehicle-pursuit policy.
