Officials probe syringes that washed ashore at N.J. beach
Authorities are investigating how dozens of syringes washed ashore at a New Jersey beach.
The 36 syringes were found Friday at Island Beach State Park in Ocean County. Officials combed the beach through Monday, looking for any additional syringes and trying to determine how they got there.
A state Department of Environmental Protection spokesman told the Asbury Park Press that all beaches had been reopened but the source of syringes was still unknown.
"We are hoping something might help us link the source of where they came from but that has not happened yet," Larry Ragonese told the newspaper.
Ragonese said the debris may have washed down from the New York area, and the syringes appeared to be a type used by diabetics.
