Glenn Dodson, 76, principal trombonist for the Philadelphia Orchestra for 27 years, died April 7 of myocardial infarction at home in Edgmont, Delaware County.
Glenn Dodson, 76, principal trombonist for the Philadelphia Orchestra for 27 years, died April 7 of myocardial infarction at home in Edgmont, Delaware County.
Born in Berwick, Pa., where he went to high school, Mr. Dodson graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1953.
He was trombone soloist for the Marine Band before joining the New Orleans Symphony in 1956. Nine years later, he became assistant first trombonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In 1968, he came to the Philadelphia Orchestra as first trombonist. Mr. Dodson retired in 1995.
Mr. Dodson also taught at Curtis and at Temple University.
He married Susan Duerr in 2005. He had been married twice before, his wife said. In the 1950s, he was married to Janice Breaux. That marriage ended in divorce after nine years. She died a few years ago. He married Annette van Merkestyn in the 1960s. That marriage ended 20 years later.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dodson is survived by a daughter, Tonda Helm; several stepchildren and grandchildren; and a sister. His second wife also survives.
A concert will be held in Mr. Dodson's honor at 8 p.m. April 24 at Curtis School of Music, 1726 Locust St.
