Marci Resnick, 52, of Roxborough, an elementary school teacher who worked with the Philadelphia and National Writing Projects, died of lung cancer Monday at Chestnut Hill Hospital.

After graduating from Olney High School in 1971, Ms. Resnick went to Temple University, where she earned a bachelor's in 1975, and a master's in 1978, both in education.

She taught second grade at S. Weir Mitchell Elementary School, 5500 Kingsessing Ave., for 20 years.

In 1995, Ms. Resnick left the classroom and worked for the Philadelphia Writing Project, a network of organizations and teaching consultants from schools and universities working to improve literacy and learning.

In 2000, Ms. Resnick took a leadership role with the National Writing Project. In 2006, she trained a team of educators to improve the teaching of reading and writing in schools nationwide. She worked until shortly before her death.

"Marci was devoted to her students and an inspiration for her commitment to social justice, excellence, and love of learning," said Richard Sterling, National Writing Project director.

She married Steve Jones in 1988.

In addition to her husband, Ms. Resnick is survived by her sons, David and Daniel Jones; her parents, Bernard and Temmie Resnick; and two sisters.

Services were Tuesday. Shiva will be observed through today.
