Samuel K. Blumenthal, 93, of Elkins Park, a retired chocolate company vice president and director emeritus of Frankford Hospital, died Sunday at home.

Samuel K. Blumenthal, 93, of Elkins Park, a retired chocolate company vice president and director emeritus of Frankford Hospital, died Sunday at home.

Mr. Blumenthal graduated from Cheltenham High School. After earning a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., he joined Blumenthal Bros. Chocolate Co. in Frankford. The company, established by his family in 1910, produced Goobers, Raisinets, Sno-Caps and Malties candies.

During World War II, he remained with the firm, which supplied cocoa powder and chocolate bars to the armed forces. He also volunteered with the port security force in Philadelphia and served on the Ration Board.

Mr. Blumenthal was vice president of Blumenthal Bros. in 1969 when it was sold to Ward Chocolate Co. He worked for Ward for several years before retiring.

For more than 50 years, he served on the board of Frankford Hospital. In the 1970s, as board president, he helped develop the hospital's Torresdale campus. For 30 years, he was president of the board of Mount Sinai Cemetery.

Mr. Blumenthal was a longtime subscriber to the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera and was an ardent follower of thoroughbred horse racing.

He is survived by a daughter, Sally Kahan; sons David, Jay, and Paul; a brother; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His wife of 23 years, Carolyn Blumenthal, died in 1960. In 1961, he married Florence Trichon. She died in 1997.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Mount Sinai Cemetery, Bridge and Cottage Streets, Philadelphia. The family will receive guests after 1 p.m. at Briar House, 8302 York Rd., Elkins Park.
