Gerald C. McHugh, 77, of West Chester, a retired bank president, died of cancer Friday at his home.

Mr. McHugh grew up in Upper Darby and graduated from West Philadelphia High School for Boys. During the Korean War he served in the Navy in Washington.

In 1956 he became a teller at Greater Delaware Valley Savings & Loan in Upper Darby. At night he studied accounting at St. Joseph's College, and was promoted to management at Greater Delaware Valley, which became Alliance Bank. After retiring as president of Alliance in 1989, he was chairman of the bank's board for eight years.

Mr. McHugh enjoyed summers in Avalon, N.J., with his family; winter vacations in Florida; and travel to Europe, Mexico, the Caribbean and Hawaii with his wife, Joan McLaughlin McHugh. He was a member of Hershey's Mill Golf Club in West Chester and Pelican Sound Golf and River Club in Estero, Fla.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, Mr. McHugh is survived by a son, Gerald M.; daughters Kathleen Chominski, Maureen Scott, Patricia Mingey, Susan Ringiewicz and Barbara Prieto; a brother; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today at SS. Peter and Paul Church, 1325 Boot Rd., East Goshen, where friends may call after 10. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
