Jack Wolgin, 93, a prominent commercial real estate developer in Center City beginning in the 1970s, as well as a banker and philanthropist, died today at his home in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, he left his mark as much in terms of the buildings he developed - including Center Square - as in the art he helped encourage.
The Claes Oldenburg Clothespin at the Center Square plaza at 15th and Market Streets has been described as his most influential arts commission.
At Temple University's Tyler School of Arts, the Jack Wolgin International Competition in the Fine Arts was established last year to recognize an emerging artist "whose work transcends traditional boundaries and exemplifies the highest level of artistic excellence."
The $150,000 cash award is the world's largest juried visual art prize granted by a university and awarded to an individual.
