Being diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer in July 2008 didn't stop John T. Costanzo.
With exceptional courage and determination, John accepted the kind of news that would devastate many people, and went back to work.
"He maintained a rigorous schedule while enduring the treatments for and effects of the disease without resentment or complaint, never asking for anything more than a chance to fight and enjoy his time with his family and friends," his family said.
John Costanzo, a 25-year year worker in the mortgage business, where he was highly respected for his expertise and friendly nature, died Friday. He was 48 and lived in Hockessin, Del.
"He was quiet and unassuming, but a hard worker, solid citizen and a helluva football player in high school," a member of his extended family said.
"As John battled cancer, he kept going to work and driving himself for chemo treatments almost until the very end."
John followed family tradition by attending the University of Notre Dame. His father, Joseph, attended Notre Dame; his mother, Marilyn, attended St. Mary's College, the Notre Dame sister school.
John's sister, Laura Davies, attended St. Mary's and Notre Dame Law School, and his brother, Joseph, received his master's degree from Notre Dame.
"He flourished under the Dome of Our Lady and cherished his time at ND," his family said.
John was born in Lewis Run, McKean County, Pa., and was a standout football player at Bradford Central Christian High School, in Bradford, Pa.
After receiving his degree in business administration from Notre Dame, John began a career in the mortgage business, starting with MGIC (Mortgage Guaranty Insurance Co.) and ending with Fifth Third Bank.
"He became a trusted and highly respected expert and true friend to innumerable colleagues and customers," his family said.
"His quiet and gentle spirit remains undefeated, living on in all those who loved him. He fought so hard, he earned his rest."
He married Denise Durso, of Rehoboth Beach, Del., in 1987.
John also is survived by twin daughters, Megan and Taylor.
