Dallas W. Hartman, 85, of North Wales, a former surveying crew chief and volunteer fire company leader, died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 27, at Abington Health Lansdale Hospital.
Dallas W. Hartman, 85, of North Wales, a former surveying crew chief and volunteer fire company leader, died of cancer Saturday, Aug. 27, at Abington Health Lansdale Hospital.
His daughter, Karen Gillespie, said in a phone interview Tuesday that Mr. Hartman was assistant chief of the North Penn Volunteer Fire Company from 1958 to 1975 and its chief from 1976 to 1981.
She said that after he retired from surveying in the early 1990s, Mr. Hartman was deputy fire marshal for North Wales Borough in 1992 and the borough's fire marshal and code enforcer from 1993 until earlier this year.
Born in Benton, Pa., Mr. Hartman graduated from Danville (Pa.) High School in 1944 and during World War II served with the Navy Seabees in the Aleutian Islands.
After working as a state surveyor in Bloomsburg, his daughter said, Mr. Hartman led surveying crews for three Montgomery County civil-engineering firms.
In 1950, Mr. Hartman joined the North Penn Volunteer Fire Company. He became a lifetime member and played on its baseball and bowling teams.
His daughter said that he was president and vice president of the Keystone State Fire Chiefs Association. He was also a member of the Eastern Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs.
At North Wales Baptist Church, he was a deacon and a trustee.
Besides his daughter, Mr. Hartman is survived by two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother; and two sisters. His wife, Margery, died in 2005.
A viewing was set from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, at North Wales Baptist Church, 136 Shearer St., North Wales. A second viewing was set there from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, before a life celebration there at 11 a.m. Burial is to be in the church cemetery.
