Former Inquirer reporter, editor Chuck Newman dies
Chuck Newman, 79, who covered the Flyers and local college teams during a three-decade career at The Inquirer and was an affable character in the newsroom, has died.
Chuck Newman, 79, who covered the Flyers and local college teams during a three-decade career at The Inquirer and was an affable character in the newsroom, has died.
Mr. Newman suffered a heart attack and was found dead in his Glen Mills home Wednesday, said his daughter, Allyson.
Mr. Newman was the Flyers beat writer during their Stanley Cup heyday in the 1970s and also covered Villanova when it won the NCAA men's basketball championship in 1985.
More recently, until his retirement about a decade ago, Mr. Newman was an editor in The Inquirer's sports department.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Newman is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons Scott and Brett; and four grandchildren. His first wife, Arlene Hoffman, died in 2007.
