Walter A. Lamont | Music supervisor, 83

Walter A. Lamont, 83, of Holland, retired music supervisor for the School District of Philadelphia, died Sunday, Feb. 3, at Abington Hospice at Warminster of end-stage renal disease.

Walter A. Lamont, 83, of Holland, retired music supervisor for the School District of Philadelphia, died Sunday, Feb. 3, at Abington Hospice at Warminster of end-stage renal disease.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Lamont graduated from Olney High School. In 1951, he earned his bachelor of science degree in music education from West Chester State University. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1953.

Mr. Lamont worked for the Centennial School District for two years before he was hired by the Philadelphia School District in the 1950s.

He taught vocal music at Wilson Junior High School and then at Frankford High School. He also was responsible for the vocal music programs in all the city's public junior high schools for four decades.

Mr. Lamont attended Temple University at night and earned a master's degree in music education. He also attended the St. Olaf College choir school in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Mr. Lamont was choir director for 29 years at Bustleton Methodist Church in Philadelphia.

After retiring in the 1990s, he was active in the Antique Car Club of America, driving his 1929 Model A to car shows. He was a member of the Suburban Video Club and enjoyed driving his motor home throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He was a Mason with Masonic Lodge 427, in Woodside, Bucks County.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Thelma J. Moist; a son, Mark, and daughters Lorrie Haskell and Holly Waterson; 10 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Langhorne Presbyterian Church, 125 E. Gillam Ave., Langhorne, followed by a memorial service at 11. Interment is private.
