James J. Manley Sr., 79, a marketing manager for Lehman Brothers, the former financial services firm, died of kidney cancer Thursday, June 27, at his home in Cranbury, N.J.

Mr. Manley not only was a starting quarterback in high school and college but returned to coach football at his high school before beginning his career, daughter Mia Lindberg said in a phone interview.

Born in Pittston, Luzerne County, Mr. Manley graduated from St. John the Evangelist High School there in 1951, where he played several varsity sports and earned an academic-athletic scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.

He needed the scholarship because his Irish immigrant father had died in a coal-mining accident, his daughter said.

His quarterbacking put him onto a major stage.

"He tells stories of Franklin Field filled" for his Penn games against major teams such as the University of Notre Dame, his daughter said. The Ivy League was not formed until 1954.

Mr. Manley graduated from the Wharton School at Penn in 1955 with a bachelor's in economic and industrial relations and returned to St. John's to coach football for two years, his daughter said.

He served in the Marine Corps from 1956 through 1959, she said, including duty during the 1958 Marine intervention in a sectarian conflict in Lebanon.

He retired as a colonel in the Marine Reserves in 1985.

After working as an assistant football coach at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Mr. Manley in 1967 became a marketing manager in the New York City office of IBM and attended the New York Institute of Finance.

In 1970, he joined the investment banking firm A.G. Becker as a national coordinator of labor relations programs.

The bulk of his career, his daughter said, was spent at Lehman Brothers before it declared bankruptcy in 2008.

From 1976 to 1990, she said, he was "in the sales and marketing of investment management for union and public funds. He loved it. He had a great team."

In the mid-2000s, Mr. Manley and son-in-law Keith Lindberg formed Manley Lindberg Associates, a financial marketing firm in Cranbury that worked with his other firm, 3D Asset Management, an investment advisory firm in East Hartford, Conn.

Mr. Manley was a member of several sports and investment associations.

Besides his daughter Mia, Mr. Manley is survived by his wife of 52 years, Catherine; daughters Kate Sekely and Angie Manley; and eight grandchildren. A son, James J. Jr., died in 1985.

A visitation was set from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 30, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 251 Franklin St., Hightstown, with a Funeral Mass there at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 1.

Donations may be made to the Peddie School, 201 S. Main St., Hightstown, N.J. 08520
