William H. Cannon, newspaper mailer

William Henry Calvin Cannon Jr., 78, of West Philadelphia, a longtime mailer in the production department of The Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, died Friday, Aug. 2, of natural causes at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospice in Darby Borough.

From August 1978 until retiring on Dec. 31, 2004, Mr. Cannon worked at the Inquirer Building in Center City and later at the newspapers' printing plant in Upper Merion Township.

Before that, he was a mailer for Triangle Publications Inc., which published TV Guide and Seventeen Magazine and formerly published The Inquirer.

He was a member of the Newspaper and Magazine Employees Union Local 1414 for 45 years, according to a statement by his family.

"He was a very quiet man, but a good worker," said union president Mario Pollera. "It was a pleasure to have known him."

Mr. Cannon was a 1953 graduate of Overbrook High School.

He was a veteran of the Air Force and loved military history, particularly that relating to World War II.

Surviving are a son, Kevin; four grandchildren; a sister; and five nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 8398 Lindbergh Ave. A viewing will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Washington Crossing National Cemetery.
