John DeFalco, 73, two towns' prosecutor

John A. DeFalco, 73, of Voorhees, a municipal prosecutor in Bellmawr and Oaklyn in the 1990's, died of congestive heart failure on Friday, Jan. 17, at his home.

He was a solicitor for several public entities while maintaining a private law practice, most recently in Haddonfield since 1984.

Mr. DeFalco held simultaneous responsibilities at times because "he always wanted to give back to a community that he was a part of," daughter Nicole said.

"Also, he saw that as a good way to expand his network, to have some influence in the political arena, which was something that he was involved with."

Mr. DeFalco and his wife, Kathryn, "both worked on the Florio campaign, to get him elected" as governor in 1989, she said.

Born in Camden, Mr. DeFalco graduated from Camden Catholic High School in 1958, earned a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Notre Dame in 1962, and graduated from Rutgers-Camden School of Law in 1965.

He had been a member of the board of trustees of Camden Catholic since 2008.

After he began his private practice in 1968 in Camden, Mr. DeFalco was a solicitor for the Camden County Park Commission from 1973 to 1989, when it was abolished in a county reorganization.

During that term, he was also solicitor for the Bellmawr Board of Education from 1976 to 1979, solicitor for Gloucester City from 1981 to 1988, and special counsel for Gloucester Township in 1980-81.

While a public defender in Voorhees from 1991 to 1994, he was the Oaklyn municipal prosecutor from 1992 to 1994. He was the Bellmawr municipal prosecutor from 1991 to 2001.

A member of the board of directors at Pioneer State Bank in Gloucester Township from 1969 to 1979 and for Carnegie Bank in Princeton from 1990 to 1998, Mr. DeFalco was a member of the Camden County College Re-Construction Board from 1999 to 2001.

Mr. DeFalco "donated a lot of time and money to the Notre Dame Alumni Association, for many years," his daughter said.

From 1991 to 1995, he was a member of the American Heart Association.

Besides his daughter Nicole, he is survived by daughter Dayna. His wife died in 1990.

A viewing was set from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, as well as from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, at the Funeral Manor, 1585 Hider Lane, Gloucester Township, N.J., 08021, before a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Agnes Church, 701 Little Gloucester Rd., Gloucester Township, with interment in Calvary Cemetery, Cherry Hill.
