Charles Lee McNew, 62, executive

Charles Lee McNew, 62, of Lower Gwynedd, an executive for a software company, died of a heart attack Wednesday, March 5, while vacationing in the Cayman Islands.

Mr. McNew was there with his wife, the former Sharon DeLucy, and his sister, Suzanne Suchoski, to celebrate the couple's 42d wedding anniversary.

While snorkeling with his sister at 2 p.m. March 4, just off Coconut Bay Villas in West Bay, Mr. McNew was stricken. At the time, his wife was on the beach.

His sister swam him to the shore. He was rushed to George Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. Wednesday.

In June 2013, Mr. McNew was named CEO of Freedom Systems, a software company in Eagleville that provides cost-cutting measures for municipalities.

Before that, he had worked at several other information technology companies in senior positions. He began his career as a certified public accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Born in Indianapolis, he was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School in Wilkes-Barre and Pennsylvania State University, with a degree in accounting and finance. Mr. McNew earned a master's degree in business administration from Drexel University.

His hobbies were music and travel. He loved the Beatles, playing piano and guitar, and taking his family to Hersheypark and Walt Disney World.

"His present joy was his grandchildren; he was there for all their activities and events. He also enjoyed good food, and was a wine connoisseur," his wife said.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Keary E., Kevin C., and Kyle W.; three grandchildren; a sister; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Emil J. Ciavarelli Family Funeral Home, 951 E. Butler Pike, Ambler. A life celebration is planned for 7 p.m. Interment is private.
