Filmmaker and film historian Michael Henry Wilson, 67, whose films and books focused on directors such as Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, died June 26 at home in Westlake Village, Calif. The cause was lung cancer, said his wife, Carole Wilson, who produced several of his films.
Filmmaker and film historian Michael Henry Wilson, 67, whose films and books focused on directors such as Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, died June 26 at home in Westlake Village, Calif. The cause was lung cancer, said his wife, Carole Wilson, who produced several of his films.
One of Mr. Wilson's best-known films was A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, which he codirected with Scorsese. In a review, Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan said the 1995 film "takes its place as one of the very few essential documentaries on the American film experience."
Mr. Wilson was born in Paris and came to Los Angeles in the early 1980s.
His last completed documentary was a departure in that it was not about movies. The 2010 Reconciliation: Mandela's Miracle includes interviews with not only antiapartheid leaders Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, but also with former supporters of the oppressive South African policy. - L.A. Times
