James J. Marengo Sr., 88, of Lindenwold, an Inquirer pressman from 1956 to 1992, died of complications from liver and kidney diseases Saturday, Nov. 1, at Kennedy University Hospital in Washington Township.

James J. Marengo Sr., 88, of Lindenwold, an Inquirer pressman from 1956 to 1992, died of complications from liver and kidney diseases Saturday, Nov. 1, at Kennedy University Hospital in Washington Township.
Mr. Marengo grew up near 13th and Mifflin Streets in South Philadelphia, graduated from South Philadelphia High School, and served in the Army of Occupation in Japan in the late 1940s, a daughter, Kathleen Cornwall, said.
He had been a shipfitter's apprentice at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard before his Army service and returned to work there.
In 1956, Mr. Marengo began his Inquirer career working among the several printing presses at Broad and Callowhill Streets.
At one time, he was assigned responsibility for one of the presses, overseeing it during the nighttime press runs, said a son, James J. Jr., an Inquirer pressman for 43 years.
"At that time, it was a great life," his son said. "He liked the job."
Mr. Marengo was a member of the VFW post in Somerdale.
Besides his daughter and son, Mr. Marengo is survived by sons William, Michael and Steven; daughter Linda Temprano; a sister; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Goldie.
Viewings were set from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, and 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Gardner Funeral Home, 200 S. Black Horse Pike, Bellmawr. Interment is to be at the Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hurffville.
