John W. Logan, 71, of Torresdale, a 23-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and owner of Logan's Towing, died Friday, Nov. 7, of cancer.
Mr. Logan, known as "Jack," grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and attended Abraham Lincoln High School. He worked at a factory before deciding to apply to the Police Academy.
"He loved protecting, and he was really happy to go to the Police Academy," said his wife of 49 years, Joan. "He really embraced 'protect and serve.' "
Mr. Logan worked in the Seventh, Eighth, and 39th Districts and the highway patrol, his wife said. He retired from the department 24 years ago.
While with the department, Mr. Logan drove a tow truck part-time for a few months, and that inspired him to start his own company in 1970. Joan Logan said the company began with Mr. Logan buying one tow truck; she answered the phone.
She said her husband was always happy, and was a fun, outgoing person. "He loved to tell jokes and loved to tell police stories after he retired," she said, and would accompany her to the hairdresser and entertain the stylists with his tales.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Logan is survived by daughter Bonnie Murray; sons Jack and Bill; and nine grandchildren.
A viewing is scheduled from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, and 9 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Ave. A funeral service will follow Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home. Interment is at Forest Hills Cemetery, Huntingdon Valley.
