Gary Bromberg, 83, of Springfield, Montgomery County, a commercial insurance broker and an artist, died Saturday, Jan. 31, of multiple myeloma at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Gary Bromberg, 83, of Springfield, Montgomery County, a commercial insurance broker and an artist, died Saturday, Jan. 31, of multiple myeloma at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Bromberg moved to the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia with his family when he was 5.
He graduated from Overbrook High School and from Pennsylvania State University with the Class of 1953. While there, he pledged Beta Sigma Pi fraternity.
Mr. Bromberg did further study at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School. For more than 40 years, he worked as a commercial insurance broker. He retired in 1995 from ECBM Insurance Brokers & Consultants in West Conshohocken.
In retirement, he enjoyed painting, metal sculpture, tennis, nature, and international travel.
Mr. Bromberg's painting in oils and acrylics are bold renderings of nature. His linear sculptures resemble figures in the Paleolithic cave paintings of France.
"They're very primal," said son Adam.
In 2014, Mr. Bromberg posted images of his artwork and sculpture on Facebook; viewers posted that the visuals constituted "a great body of work."
Mr. Bromberg was committed to working for the community. He volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and was thrilled when he had the chance to mentor Derreck Robinson, building a relationship that endured for the last 35 years.
Mr. Bromberg was married to Linda Maldonado. They divorced. Surviving, beside his son and former wife, are daughter Mia Maldonado Bromberg and Mr. Bromberg's longtime companion, Susan Bockius.
Memorial services will be held at the Unitarian Society of Germantown, 6511 Lincoln Dr., on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m. Burial is private.
