Mr. Carr wrote the Media Equation column for the Times, focusing on issues of media in relation to business and culture.
His column appeared in the Monday business section.
He joined the Times in 2002 as a business reporter, covering magazine publishing.
In 2008, Mr. Carr's book The Night of the Gun, chronicling his drug addiction and recovery, was published by Simon & Schuster.
Before joining the Times, Mr. Carr was a contributing writer for the Atlantic Monthly and New York magazine. He also was a media writer for news website Inside.com.
Mr. Carr served as editor of the Washington City Paper, an alternative weekly in Washington, D.C. He also was editor of a Minneapolis-based alternative weekly called Twin Cities Reader.
Mr. Carr lived in Montclair, N.J., with his wife, Jill Rooney Carr, an event planner, and their daughter Maddie. He also has twin daughters, Erin and Meagan.
