Joseph M. Barr, 31, of Gloucester Township, a former emergency medical technician there and in other South Jersey towns, died of colon cancer Saturday, April 16, at home.

Born in Camden, Mr. Barr graduated from Gloucester City High School in 2002 and from the Camden County training school for emergency medical technicians in 2003.

Over the years, wife Jacqueline said, he was on the staff of emergency medical service units in Bellmawr, Gloucester Township, and Pennsauken, the Mount Ephraim Police Reserves, and the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Camden.

He was also a volunteer member of fire units in Gloucester City and Pine Hill.

The attraction of the work, his wife said, was "to follow in his father's footsteps." His late father, Howard, also was an EMT.

Ken Fink, a police officer for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, knew Mr. Barr when they both were part-time EMTs for Gloucester Township.

As a companion on bass fishing outings, Fink said, Mr. Barr was "a great friend, a hilarious guy."

Besides his wife, Mr. Barr is survived by his mother, Margaret; daughter Emma; two brothers; and two sisters.

Viewings were set from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Leroy P. Wooster Funeral Home, 441 White Horse Pike, Atco, before a noon Funeral Mass at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 176 Stagecoach Rd., Sicklerville, with interment in Erial Cemetery.

Donations may be sent to the Emma Barr fund at the Wooster Funeral Home at the above address.
