Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes is featured in the stage production of
Annie
this weekend at The Media Theatre for the Performing Arts.
Annie tells the story of a little girl who is abandoned on the steps of a New York City orphanage run by Miss Hannigan, played by Sykes. Orphan Annie is determined to find her parents. During the course of her adventures, Annie thwarts Miss Hannigan's evil schemes, finds a new family with billionaire Oliver Warbucks, and more.
Based on the classic book by Thomas Meehan, Broadway actors Paul Jackel and Tori Heinlein star as Daddy Warbucks and Annie. Sykes is scheduled to perform through the production's last show on Jan. 23.
Minas at Kimmel
Children and adults can enjoy the sounds of Brazilian ensemble Minas at Kimmel Center's Friday Live concert at Commonwealth Plaza.
Minas, founded by the married duo of Orlando Haddad and Patricia King, will perform a free concert of their original music. Founded more than 25 years ago, Minas is one of the most recognized Brazilian ensembles, making appearances including the Emeril Live cooking show, performing at the Lincoln Center and other venues. The duo are also graduates of the University of the Arts, Drexel and Temple Universities. The free concert begins at 5:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Coca Cola.
History in the Present at African American Historical Museum
On Saturday, families will have a chance to meet a historical figure and learn about art at the African American Historical Museum.
From noon to 2 p.m., the museum will feature History in the Present. Actor Jeremiah Thompson will portray the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Guests can hear King's story of civil rights and then ask questions.
From 1 to 4 p.m., families can learn historic bookbinding techniques from across Africa and around the world from multimedia artist Martina Johnson Allen. The class is offered monthly at the museum through March.
