Malkin got tangled up with Detroit's Luke Glendening, lost his balance, and his left skate took the brunt of his crash into the boards behind Pittsburgh's net.
Joffrey Lupul and Peter Holland each scored twice to help the host Toronto Maple Leafs end a three-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Mason Raymond added four assists for the Leafs.
Dainius Zubrus scored two goals in the third period and Martin Brodeur made 33 saves, leading the New Jersey Devils past the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-0, in Newark.
Brodeur earned his third shutout of the season and 124th of his career. Jaromir Jagr assisted on both goals to raise his assist total to 1,024.
Thornton suspended
Boston Bruins forward Shawn Thornton was suspended for 15 games without pay for punching and injuring unsuspecting Pittsburgh defenseman Brooks Orpik.
Thornton went after Orpik during a stoppage in play Dec. 7, slew-footing him to the ice and punching him twice. Orpik suffered a concussion and was taken off the ice on a stretcher. Earlier, Orpik hit Boston's Loui Eriksson, knocking him out of the game with a concussion.
Thornton was assessed a match penalty.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Clarkson was suspended for two games without pay for an illegal check to St. Louis forward Vladimir Sobotka's head.
