Daily News All-City Basketball Team

Roman Catholic's Tony Carr led the Cahillites to a slew of championships, including the state title, and is our Player of the Year.

TONY CARR is as cool as they come.

There isn't much flash or panache to the Roman Catholic junior, but if you need an important basket, rebound or pass, chances are you won't find safer hands.

At 6-4 and 175 pounds, Cool Hand Carr - the city's most versatile point guard - helped the Cahillites hoard every championship possible this season.

That's why Carr, in conjunction with the Daily News All-City team, is our Player of the Year.

The North Philadelphia resident (15th and York streets) led Roman to Class AAAA city and state titles, and wrestled the coveted Catholic League title from six-time defending champion Ss. Neumann-Goretti.

For the season, Carr averaged 12.6 points, 5.7 assists, 5.5 rebounds and two steals per game. He also earned first-team All-Catholic honors from league coaches.

In the AAAA state championship win (District 12's first) against Martin Luther King High, Carr scored 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting and added six assists, five rebounds and three steals.

A coveted recruit with offers from Maryland, Temple and Penn State among others, Carr still has another year to stock the Cahillites' cabinets with more trophies.

Thumbnail sketches of the other first-teamers.

Chris Clover, St. Joseph's Prep: Possessor of the most offensively sophisticated game in the city, the 6-4 senior forward led the CL in scoring and was named MVP by league coaches. The St. Joe's signee scored 285 points in 13 games for the Hawks (21.9 per). His 476 points in 23 total games yielded 20.7 per overall, fifth best in the city. Adept at scoring from all ranges without wasting dribbles, Clover's season was highlighted by a CL season-high 37 points in a triple-overtime win against La Salle. This is Clover's second straight time on the DN's first-team All-City list.

Derrick Jones, Archbishop Carroll: After an injury to Temple-bound bigman Ernest Aflakpui, the high-flying Jones dominated down low for the Patriots. The 6-6, long-armed, UNLV-bound forward finished second in CL scoring. The senior's 226 points in 13 league contests yielded 17.4 per game. Overall, Jones scored 577 points in 30 games for a 19.2 average, 10th in the city. His season highlight came in defeat in the AAA state title to Neumann-Goretti. Jones scored 30 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and blocked five shots. This is his second consecutive appearance on the DN's first-team All-City list.

Samir Doughty, Math, Civics, Sciences: A deceptively strong 6-4 wing guard with a relentless appetite for scoring who finishes around the basket with aplomb. The senior finished second in city scoring with 685 points in 28 games (24.5 per). His Public League season highlight came with a 36-point effort against Del-Val. The St. John's-bound star makes his second consecutive appearance on the DN's first-team All-City list.

Kimar Williams, Constitution: Possessor of perhaps the city's sharpest ballhandling skills. A 6-1 guard with tremendous court vision and point-guard savvy. The senior was named Public League Division A MVP by league coaches. As a freshman, Williams was just a 5-1 guard who played sparingly. As a senior, the Florida International commit led the Generals in scoring during league play, and his 169 points in 10 games (16.9 per) was third-best in the division. Led Constitution to the Class A state title, its third state title in 4 years. Williams' Pub season highlight was a 27-point performance in a loss to Imhotep in the championship.

Our Coach of the Year is Roman Catholic's Chris McNesby: Other impressive coaching performances included: Frank Sciolla leading Conwell-Egan to its first state championship; Paul Romanczuk leading Archbishop Carroll to a runner-up finish in Class AAA play after losing Ernest Aflakpui to injury just one game into CL play; or Carl Arrigale capturing another Class AAA title and returning to the CL title after losing CL all-timer Ja'Quan Newton. McNesby, however, led the Cahillites to District 12's first Class AAAA title while also capturing the AAAA city title and the Catholic League title.
