American Athletic commissioner: No expansion plans

On a day when the American Athletic Conference released its new logo, commissioner Mike Aresco said there are no plans for future expansion.

On a day when the American Athletic Conference released its new logo, commissioner Mike Aresco said there are no plans for future expansion.

"We feel like we are complete," Aresco said during Thursday's teleconference.

The conference, formerly the Big East, will assume its new name on July 1 and will consist of Temple, Connecticut, Cincinnati, South Florida, Southern Methodist, Memphis, Houston, Louisville, Central Florida, and Rutgers next year.

Rutgers and Louisville will leave the conference and be replaced by East Carolina, Tulane, and Tulsa in 2014. Navy will join for football in 2015.

"At this point, we have no plans to expand," Aresco said. "We haven't really been talking about it. But as a commissioner once said, 'You are always alert.' But at this point, we don't have any plans."

Instead, the conference has focused on rebranding itself. Thursday's unveiling of the league's new logo was a step in the reinvention process. The logo is a large blue block 'A' with a red star at the center of the letter.

"Now, I think we have an extremely attractive logo to help define who we are," Aresco said. "It's a bold symbol, an elegant design."
