Penn State and its former defensive coordinator, Bob Shoop, have resolved their lawsuit in which the university claimed that Shoop owed $891,856 for what it said was breach of contract.

In a statement released Friday, Penn State said terms of the settlement would remain confidential, and that neither side would be making further public comment on the matter. Notice of the suit's dismissal was filed in U.S. District Court in Williamsport, Pa.

"As part of the parties' resolution, coach Shoop recognizes obligations under his employment contract with Penn State," the statement said.

Shoop left Penn State after two seasons as defensive coordinator following the 2015 season and accepted the same position at Tennessee. The university sued, claiming that because he left with two years left on his contract, he had to pay 50 percent of his annual salary for each year, or a total of $891,856.

Shoop countersued, citing "intolerable" working conditions at Penn State.

The statement said both sides "are pleased to bring this matter to an amicable resolution." It said Shoop "remains grateful for the support he received from the coaching staff, support staff and the fans while he was at Penn State."

It also said the university recognizes "that coach Shoop was an integral part of the coaching staff during his tenure at Penn State and wishes him the best in his future endeavors."

Shoop left the Tennessee staff after the 2017 season and now is defensive coordinator at Mississippi State under head coach Joe Moorhead, the former Penn State offensive coordinator.
