THE EAGLES HAVE re-signed defensive tackle Derek Landri to a 1-year deal and placed defensive tackle Antonio Dixon on the injured reserve list with a torn triceps.
Landri spent the preseason with the Eagles, but was released as part of the team's final roster cutdown. He is entering his fifth NFL season after spending the first 4 years of his career in Jacksonville (2007-09) and Carolina (2009-10).
Landri had a strong training camp and preseason. In fact, Eagles general manager Howie Roseman compared him to Paul Grasmanis, another undersized former Notre Dame defensive tackle who became a useful player for the Birds. But at the end of the preseason, it didn't seem Landri would have a regular role, and, rather than spend money on a veteran who wouldn't be active most weeks, the Birds opted to keep former CFL star Phillip Hunt, a first-year NFL defensive end.
The situation has changed with Dixon's injury. The Eagles came out of the San Francisco loss with only three healthy DTs, so Landri seems very likely to be active in Buffalo on Sunday.
In the preseason, Landri seemed capable of generating a pass rush, but at 6-2, 290, he didn't seem to have run-stopping bulk, which would seem to be a critical need for the Eagles right now.
Landri started all 16 games for the Panthers in 2010, posting 43 tackles and three sacks.
