The Eagles extended the contract of Brandon Hughes, signing the cornerback through the 2013 season, according to an NFL source.
Hughes signed the extension after he made the Eagles' 53-man roster earlier this month. He is slated to earn $540,000 this season and will have a base salary of $630,000 next season with various performance-based escalators.
Hughes, now in his third season in the NFL, has become a dependable special teams performer for the Eagles. He has also chipped in on defense and can play both outside and in the slot.
The Oregon State product was originally drafted by the Chargers in the fifth round of the 2009 draft. He spent his rookie season on Injured Reserve. The New York Giants had Hughes on their practice squad for most of the 2010 season before the Eagles picked him up.
Hughes, 26, played in one game for the Eagles in 2010, 13 in 2011 and has been active for the first two games of this season. He is currently second among non-kickers on the Eagles' special teams points list behind linebacker Akeem Jordan.
