The Eagles announced they released reserve quarterback Trent Edwards on Monday, a day before the team opens its first minicamp under coach Chip Kelly.
Edwards' release comes as little surprise. The Eagles added two quarterbacks already this offseason -- Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne -- and are expected to select another during next week's NFL draft.
Kelly has said that his offensive system does not require mobile quarterbacks, but Dixon and Kinne are considered athletic quarterbacks. Edwards, on the other hand, is primarily a pocket passer at this point in his career.
Many have questioned where Nick Foles fits in. The second-year quarterback is expected to compete with Michael Vick for the starting job -- unless Kelly takes a quarterback early in the draft -- but he is also a pocket quarterback.
Foles said two weeks ago that he believes he can play for Kelly and in his up-tempo offense.
The 29-year-old Edwards was signed last February to a one-year contract after he spent all of the 2011 season on the street. He surprisingly beat out Mike Kafka for the third quarterback spot during last preseason. He also served as a mentor of sorts to Foles, who he had known before coming to the Eagles.
