The Eagles worked out former Cowboys running back Felix Jones on Tuesday at the NovaCare Complex.

A free agent, Jones was a multipurpose back in Dallas. He ran for 2,728 yards on 569 carries (a 4.8-yards average) and caught 127 passes for 1,062 yards in five seasons. He also scored 11 rushing touchdowns, caught three more through the air and averaged 24 yards on kick returns. Jones returned a kick 98 yards for a score against the Eagles when he was a rookie.

The Eagles could be in the market for an upgrade at running back. LeSean McCoy is the franchise starter, but his backups - Bryce Brown and Chris Polk - have little NFL experience. Brown was impressive in his first two starts for the injured McCoy last season, but he fumbled too much.

Polk did not register a carry. He battled a foot injury for much of the season, but coach Chip Kelly has spoken highly of Polk this offseason. The Eagles traded third-year running back Dion Lewis to the Browns last month.

The 5-foot-10, 215-pound Jones turns 26 on Wednesday. He did not draw much attention during the early portion of free agency, but he worked out for the Bengals. Jones could be an asset, though, in Kelly's up-tempo offense that is expected to feature a heavy workload for running backs.

"We're constantly looking for ways to upgrade our roster," Eagles general manager Howie Roseman said. "We're looking at guys on the street who are on our short list. And if there is anyone that we think has an opportunity to come in and compete and add competition, we'll look at them."

Jones was drafted in the first round of the 2008 draft, a round before the Eagles took McCoy. The various injuries he has accumulated over his career have led to some calling him "Fragile Felix."
