RUN OFFENSE
Chip Kelly spent a lot of money on DeMarco Murray and Ryan Mathews. But after the Falcons stuffed Murray on his first couple of carries, Kelly completely abandoned the run in the first half. The Eagles ran it just seven times for eight yards in the first 30 minutes. They ran it more in the second half, with Murray scoring on an eight-yard run and Mathews giving the Eagles the lead midway through the fourth quarter with a one-yard run and a big assist from left guard Allen Barbre.
GRADE: B-minus
PASS OFFENSE
That 10-for-10 preseason performance against the Packers by Sam Bradford seemed like ages ago in the first half when he completed just 15 of 27 passes and threw a costly interception. But the passing game caught fire in the second half
GRADE: B-plus
RUN DEFENSE
The Eagles did a good job against the Falcons' run game in the first half, holding them to 41 yards on 17 carries. Gave up 40 yards on five carries to rookie Tevin Coleman in the third quarter.
GRADE: B-plus
PASS DEFENSE
Both Byron Maxwell and Nolan Carroll had their problems against wide receiver Julio Jones early on. Jones had eight catches, two for TDs, in the first half. Linebacker Kiko Alonso made a nice touchdown-saving interception in the first quarter and safety Walter Thurmond set up the Eagles' first second-half touchdown with another interception. But Maxwell gave up another costly long pass to Jones in the fourth quarter.
GRADE: C-plus
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Eagles' coverage teams were rock solid, but a poor 31-yard punt by Donnie Jones in the second quarter set up an Atlanta field goal. Kicker Cody Parkey missed a 44-yard field goal late in the game that would have given the Eagles a one-point lead.
GRADE: C
OVERALL
The Eagles dominated the game offensively and defensively in the second half, but that was after digging themselves a 20-3, first-half hole.
