Eagles place Chris Maragos on injured reserve, promote Nate Gerry from practice squad
Maragos injured his knee against Carolina and will be a big loss on special teams.
The Eagles placed special teams ace Chris Maragos on injured reserve Thursday and promoted rookie linebacker Nate Gerry from the practice squad.
Maragos, a reserve safety, suffered a knee injury last Thursday against Carolina. By going on IR, he is finished for the season unless the Eagles use one of their two "designated to return" options on Maragos, in which case he may return after eight weeks. Maragos is seldom used on defense, but plays a key role on the Eagles' special teams. He's the captain of the unit and has six tackles this season. The 30-year old, eight-year veteran has been with the Eagles since 2014.
Gerry, 22, was a fifth-round pick who did not make the roster out of the preseason. He has been on the practice squad and continues his conversion from safety to linebacker. He will add depth at linebacker and could also provide value on special teams. Gerry was the only Eagles draft pick who did not make the 53-man roster in September.
