Source: Eagles to hire North Carolina's Gunter Brewer as wide receivers coach

The Eagles are set to hire North Carolina's Gunter Brewer as wide receivers coach, a league source said Monday.

Brewer has been the Tar Heels' co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach, and his previous stops include Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, and Marshall. He has never coached in the NFL.

Inside Carolina first reported that Brewer was taking the Eagles job. 

Brewer has an extensive resume working with wide receivers, including Randy Moss at Marshall and Dez Bryant and Justin Blackmon at Oklahoma State. He coached Eagles receiver Mack Hollins with the Tar Heels. Hollins, a 2017 fourth-round pick, might become a starter in 2018.

Brewer replaces Mike Groh, who became the Eagles' offensive coordinator. Coach Doug Pederson said last week that the Eagles would make an outside hire for the job, and he added that NFL experience would not be a necessity.

"I want to make sure the guy is right. And now that our bar is high — Groh came in and did an outstanding job for us — I want to make sure he's speaking the same language that we are," Pederson said at the scouting combine. "I'm looking at both [NFL and college]. If they have pro experience, obviously that's a bonus. But it doesn't necessarily have to be the deciding factor in that decision."

Brewer will be the Eagles' fourth wide receivers coach in four years. He will oversee a group that will include Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor, among others. The Eagles will have to decide whether to retain Torrey Smith, who will count $5 million against the salary cap. Hollins and Shelton Gibson were both draft picks last year who could have bigger roles in 2018.
