Saturday Night Live's new season premier came just in time to take a shot at the Flyers' new mascot, Gritty.

They didn't pull any punches.

In the 'Weekend Update' segment, co-anchor Colin Jost, a New York native, had some fun at the expense of the polarizing new Philadelphia figure.

"This is an interesting fact, Gritty was actually the first mascot based off the crayon drawings of a five-year-old who saw his parents murdered," Jost said.

It's safe to assume Gritty has developed a thick skin, at the very least. His national explosion came with lots of publicity opportunities — including going on the 'Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon' and most recently the Phillies game on Saturday night — but has also come with a brigade of memes.

Here's hoping Gritty can recover from the insults. Maybe he'll turn it into an appearance next week.
