Three from Lenape among girls' soccer all-stars
Lenape was The Inquirer's No. 1 girls' soccer team in South Jersey for the third straight year, having won its third consecutive Group 4 state title, and the Indians are represented by three players on this year's Inquirer all-South Jersey team.
Lenape was The Inquirer's No. 1 girls' soccer team in South Jersey for the third straight year, having won its third consecutive Group 4 state title, and the Indians are represented by three players on this year's Inquirer all-South Jersey team.
They are senior defenders Carolyn Wiley and Carley Carmody, and sophomore forward Katie Rigby.
Wiley is a repeat first-team selection. She was a stopper who also was dangerous on free kicks, with four goals and five assists. Wiley has won a scholarship to Rider.
Carmody was a starter on three state-championship teams. An outside back the last two years, she didn't allow a player she was marking to score in those two seasons. She was also capable of pushing up on the attack, and had a goal and an assist in Lenape's 3-2 state Group 4 semifinal win over Jackson. Carmody will join Wiley as a member of the Rider soccer team.
The remaining first-team defender is Paul VI senior Becky Sparks, both a midfielder and stopper for the Eagles, who finished second in the final Inquirer South Jersey rankings. Often helping the attack, Sparks had 13 career goals and 15 assists. She has accepted a scholarship to James Madison.
Lenape's Rigby was among the top clutch scorers in South Jersey. A key member of consecutive state-title teams, she had 13 goals and 14 assists this year and scored the game-winner in a 1-0 overtime win over Westfield in the state Group 4 final. In two seasons, Rigby has 26 goals and 21 assists.
Joining Rigby as first-team forwards are Paul VI sophomore Brittany Ratcliffe, Washington Township senior Janine Valerio, and Shawnee junior Shannon Dennehey.
Ratcliffe had 23 goals and 12 assists in a breakout season after scoring 12 goals as freshman. This season, she scored in 17 games and was involved in 10 game-winners with either a goal or an assist.
Valerio was among the toughest players when it came to breaking down defenders. She had the enviable combination of strength and quickness, and totaled 24 goals and six assists for the third-ranked Minutemaids. Valerio had a school record of 53 goals and also had 21 career assists. She has accepted a scholarship to Marshall.
After missing her freshman year and part of her sophomore season because of a knee injury, Dennehey exploded for 21 goals and 11 assists this season. The goals were the most by a Shawnee player since the Renegades joined the Olympic Conference in 1997.
Besides Chelsea Duffy of Gloucester Catholic, The Inquirer's South Jersey player of the year, the other midfielders on the first team are Triton's Anna Dolhansky and Eastern's Kerri Aiken.
Dolhansky was a force in the central midfield, equally effective as a distributor and scorer. She had 21 goals and nine assists. The four-year varsity player has won a scholarship to La Salle.
Aiken was one of South Jersey's top players in the air. She had six goals and 11 assists for the South Jersey Group 4 finalists. She is a former goalie who had 19.5 career shutouts, and will join Dolhansky at La Salle. Aiken was also named to the all-American team of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The first-team goalie is Cherry Hill West senior Kendra Griffith, who was equally adept at stopping high and low shots. She had six shutouts and saved two penalty kicks this season. Griffith will continue her education and soccer career at the College of New Jersey.
