Citing the heavy workload associated with being a head football coach and wanting to spend more time with his family, Bart Szarko has stepped down at Central Bucks South after six seasons.
"When I took the job six years ago, I really thought I wanted to do it until I resigned from teaching," Szarko said. "But the time demands became too much. I don't want to be there if I'm only giving the kids a 75 percent effort."
Szarko, a math teacher at C.B. South, compiled a 24-38 record. This season, the Titans went 3-7 overall and 3-4 in the Suburban One League Continental Conference.
"I'm not done coaching, but I'm done being a head coach," he said. "Being a head coach is a 365-day-a-year, 7-day-a-week commitment. It really takes a toll on you, especially when you have young kids at home."
Szarko added, "If the right person gets the job at South, I would certainly talk to him and consider being on the staff."
C.B. South's best season under Szarko came in 2007, when the Titans, after going a combined 6-24 in their first three varsity seasons, went 7-0 en route to the National Conference title, advanced to the second round of the PIAA District 1 Class AAAA tournament, and finished 11-1 overall.
