Camden hires Savage to coach football

Dwayne Savage, who played football at Rancocas Valley and Montclair State, has been named coach at Camden High School.

Savage replaces Durwin Pearson, who coached Camden for the previous three seasons. Pearson is now an assistant coach at Camden Catholic.

Savage, who teaches physical education in middle school in Pennsauken, is a former assistant coach at Rancocas Valley, Woodrow Wilson, and Pennsauken.

He is a 1989 Rancocas Valley graduate who was an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference defensive back at Montclair State.

"It's a great opportunity," Savage said. "We're going to try to make some noise this year."

Pending board approval, Savage said his coaching staff will include former NFL players Kevin Ross and Fred Baxter.

Ross, a Paulsboro graduate, played 14 seasons in the NFL as a defensive back and also coached in the NFL for seven seasons. Baxter played 11 seasons in the NFL as a tight end.

Savage said his coaching staff also will include former Rancocas Valley head coach Sam Jenkins and former Woodrow Wilson stars Melik Brown, who played at North Carolina, and Preston Brown, his brother, who played at Tulane.

"We're going to have one of the best coaching staffs in South Jersey," Savage said.
