When Tamara Sellers sank a corner three-pointer with two minutes left, it felt oddly familiar.
Sellers earned legendary status last postseason with clutch threes late in games.
They were part of the swagger of a Woodrow Wilson girls' basketball team that won a state title and advanced to the semifinals of the Tournament of Champions.
Last postseason, a Sellers three-pointer was the team's way of putting an opponent on notice.
Thrilling comebacks against higher-ranked teams usually followed.
And that's exactly what happened Saturday afternoon.
Wilson erased a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit en route to a 46-43 victory over Haddon Township at the Bishop Eustace Girls' Shootout. The Hawks entered the game with a 13-0 record and the No. 3 ranking in The Inquirer's South Jersey girls' basketball Top 10.
"This definitely had the feel of what they did last year," said Tigers coach Bernie Hynson. "This was the game we were waiting for. Today was the team that I know."
It was a signature win for unranked Wilson (10-5), a team struggling to regain the magic from last season, when clutch wins were commonplace.
The players said they channeled the energy of graduated star Chanelle Perry, the team's leader last season who is now playing at Clemson.
"I thought about Chanelle, how she would take over the game," said guard Ciarah Bennett, who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, finishing with 17 points and five steals. "I tried to play with the spirit she played with."
"This gives us momentum," she added. "This helps us believe in ourselves."
Bennett was part of a trio of senior guards - including Lyayshia Stevens (15 points) and Sellers (7) - who took over in the final period.
On the heels of Sellers' clutch three to bring the Tigers to within two points, Bennett hit a three-pointer to pull her team to within one with 1 minute, 14 seconds left. With 56 seconds left, Bennett converted both ends of a one-and-one to give her team a lead it never lost. On the next possession, Stevens came up with her fifth steal of the game.
Defense was critical. The Tigers recorded 15 steals, squashing several opportunities for Haddon Township to pull away.
Hawks star guard Morgan Lenahan battled foul trouble all game and picked up her fifth with 1:05 left.
Earlier in the quarter, she hit a long-range three to give the Hawks a 40-31 lead with 5:39 left. It was the biggest lead for either team in a game that was tight throughout.
It prompted a timeout by Hynson, and Wilson answered with seven consecutive points.
"It was a fun atmosphere," Hawks coach Tommie Mulligan said. "We just missed too many shots. It was just a tough game."
