Recent Delsea grad Bryan Dobzanski was intent on attending the University of Louisville on a baseball scholarship until the St. Louis Cardinals made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
A 29th-round draft choice of St. Louis earlier this month, the hard-throwing righthander said Tuesday night that he would sign with the Cardinals on Thursday in Florida.
The slot value for all draft choices selected after the 10th round is $100,000, but Dobzanski said he would be signing for considerably more.
"They are offering me $700,000," he said by phone. "I pretty much had my mind set on attending Louisville, but that offer threw me off guard."
A two-time state wrestling champion, Dobzanski was 3-0 with a 0.91 ERA this past season. He had 68 strikeouts in 46 innings.
"This is a dream come true," Dobzanski said. "I always wanted to be a professional baseball player."
