It was be-careful-what-you-wish-for night at Widener Friday as West Catholic conquered visiting McDevitt, 41-0. The upstart Lancers, who last beat the Burrs in 2002, are talented, tough and hungry.
They also stated their intentions clearly. They were tired of losing to West Catholic and wanted a shot at one of the most storied programs in the Catholic League. The Burrs (6-1, 4-0) had other plans.
Junior quarterback Zaire Hart-Hawkins was stellar, throwing for 191 yards and three touchdowns on 10-of-16 passing. Senior running back Jacir Savoy added 94 yards and a score on 17 carries. Junior Zahir Booker rushed for 59 yards on 9 carries.
The West Catholic defense held McDevitt junior quarterback and Division I prospect Lonnie Rice to 117 yards on 7-of-21 passing. Rice also added just 12 yards on 11 carries. Sophomore running back Jon Luke Peaker was likewise held in check with 22 yards on 11 attempts for the Lancers (5-2, 3-1)
