Cardinal O'Hara dismisses boys' coach

Tim Kelly has been let go as Cardinal O'Hara boys' basketball coach after five seasons.

"They said they didn't like the way the program was going," he said. "It kind of came out of nowhere, because I didn't get a lot of feedback in the time I was there."

Kelly, a 1983 O'Hara graduate, went 34-46. The Lions were 8-14 overall and 2-11 in the Catholic League this season.

"I think it was just a decision that we needed to go in a different direction," O'Hara athletic director Steve Langley said.

O'Hara went 13-11 in 2011-12, losing to eventual champion Neumann-Goretti in the Catholic League playoffs.

"I love the game," said Kelly, 47. "I didn't get into coaching for me or any personal accomplishments. I did it to give back to O'Hara and help the kids have a great experience."

Mellor in charge. Harriton has tabbed Justin Mellor, formerly the defensive coordinator at Haverford High, as its football coach.

"I've been working toward this since I was a senior in high school," said Mellor, 37. "To have it come to fruition, it's unbelievably exciting."

Mellor, 37, spent the last 15 seasons coaching at Haverford, where he is a math teacher. The Oreland resident played fullback and linebacker for Upper Dublin in the early 1990s.

Mellor replaces Matt Barr, who stepped down after six seasons.
